About the area

Founded in 1253 by Alphonse de Poitiers, on the border of Perigord and Guyenne, Villeneuve sur Lot was built on the site of the town of Gajac, which had been deserted during the Albigensian crusade. It was one of the largest and most powerful walled town in the whole South West of France.
Discover the beauty of this charming town with its year round entertainment: guided tours of the medieval town, tour of the national stud farms, exhibitions at Gajac Museum, Comedy Festival Book Fairs, to name but a few. During summer, you can enjoy many concerts on the banks of the river Lot.

A place to be seen!
The old medieval village of Pujols, officially registered as one of the ‘most beautiful villages in France’, looks down on Villeneuve sur Lot from its highest point of 180 meters above sea level.
At the northern entrance of the village, you can see the ramparts, remnants of the fortified place Baron Jean de Pujols built in the late XIIIth century.
It is also possible to see the fortified gateway built to protect the chapel (which later became St Nicolas church in the XIVth and XVth century), and the old timbered houses of the main street.

This quaint little village is exceptionally well preserved. Located in the Lot et Garonne, only a few miles away from Dordogne, Montflanquin is also regione of the "most beautiful villages in France", and is a well appreciated destination for nature lovers and countryside holidays.
